About The Wentworth Letter by Joseph Smith

The "Wentworth letter" was a letter written in 1842 by Latter Day Saint movement founder Joseph Smith to "Long" John Wentworth, editor and proprietor of the Chicago Democrat. It outlined the history of the Latter Day Saint movement up to that time, and included Mormonism's Articles of Faith. The letter was written in response to Wentworth's inquiry on behalf of one of his friends, George Barstow, who was writing a history of New Hampshire. The letter was first published on March 1, 1842 in the Times and Seasons in Nauvoo, Illinois.

Wentworth was the editor of a major newspaper in the 1830 - 1840 era, I think in Chicago, Joseph Smith Jun was the founder of the church known commonly as "The Mormons" now with over 15 mil members worldwide. In this early letter exchange Joseph Smith was trying to tell Wentworth how the beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints differ from other Christians. For example, rather than a 3 in 1 Trinity description of God, Mormons believe in 3 distinct and separate beings forming the Godhead. Smith tells his story to this newspaper editor to establish the historical time line and facts that were the beginning of this worldwide movement. Smith claims that the Mormon doctrine differences are not just interpretations from Bible study and reflection, but rather from direct interaction with God, the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. As a news event, there is no moment in history more significant to humankind than the things described in the Wentworth letter. Everyone should at least read it, then make up your own mind as to it's truth of things reported to have happened. As for me, and more than 15 mil other people living today, I declare its truthfulness.

The Wentworth Letter By Joseph Smith Illustrated Joseph Smith 9781540761330 Books Reviews

This letter is a well written shortened account of the beginnings of the church and the beliefs of the Mormon peoples. It's an account of the hardships and injustice that the early Mormons endured simply for being Mormon. I would recommend any LDS member to read and reflect on Joseph's letter.
It appears that in the Times and Seasons, issue dated March 1, 1842, Joseph Smith, the Prophet, published what has come to be known as the Wentworth Letter

Describing his reasons for producing this document, Joseph Smith explained

"At the request of Mr. John Wentworth, Editor and Proprietor of the Chicago Democrat, I have written the following sketch of the rise, progress, persecution, and faith of the Latter-day Saints, of which I have the honor, under God, of being the founder"
I found the Wentworth Letter to be straight forward and easily understandable. It stated the history and beliefs of the church. I would recommend this for anyone who would like to know a little about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
I have been wanting to research Joseph Smith more fully and understand him and everything that happened to him in order to establish the church. I really loved this book because it was short, to the point, yet still gave a lot of detail. I definitely recommend for anyone that's investigating the church, or even members that want to freshen up on their JS history!
"Predictable", "Some Twists", and "Full of surprises" are appropriate questions for a novel. This is a text book -- a very good one, and very interesting. It's worth reading for all the things you learn and for the background of things you already know.
"The Wentworth Letter - Edition" by Joseph Smith, is just that it's a letter explaining about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and ending with what is now called "The Articles of Faith." The Articles of Faith outline 13 basic points of belief of The Church of Jesus Christ and are found in the Pearl of Great Price. The Wentworth Letter
There are actual letters written by Joseph Smith Jr. and so all are written in the 1st person. Gives you a good in depth view of what the Prophet was like and how he handled situations. I had heard so much about these letters that it was great to have it on my phone so I could read it. It is a short read...can read it in about 30 minutes or so. A worthwhile read.
